Difference between 116.980 and 116.981 engine

Both are 3.5 engines whats the difference

The M116.980 was used in the 108 280 SE/L 3.5 from 70 to 72 and the 111 280 SEC 3.5 coupe and convertible from 69 to 71.

The M116.981 was used in the 109 300 SE 3.5 from 69 to 71.

They both displaced 3499 cc and produced 200 bhp. Perhaps the engine numbers reflected modifications to accommodate different chassises.
