Electronic Keyless Remote

Just purchased 99 E320 4matic wagon with only one Electronic key remote however mechanical key from this FOB does not fuction in driver's door or hatch. I would appreciate suggestion as to what to buy and from which sources. A local dealer in Greenwich, Ct wants $170 for an all new complete Electronic remote transmitter but no mention was made of price or availability of buying a Electronic reserve key w/o remote control functions but having the removable mechanical key??? Thanks for any leads

RE: Electronic Keyless Remote

There is abundant experience and forums discussing the Electronic Smart Keys.

In no case can a key purchased on eBay be re-keyed to operate in a new car. The keys can be programmed only once.

What's not clear is whether the mechanical portion of the key is mis-cut, or the electronic portion has gremlins.

Normally the mechanical key isn't used - it's really for emergencies. The Smart Key is really 2 devices. The remote has 2 flat nickel sized batteries that may need replacing. The ignition key portion is not dependent on batteries and instead has a coil that interfaces with the ignition switch.

The mechanical mini-key can be re-cut at a dealer or a designated locksmith, but the elecronic Smart Key is manufactured by the factory from your VIN number.

Order an additional, not a replacement key, or your existing keys will stop working.

The best price out there is around $130 to $140.

From what you say, I would check the batteries first and maybe you can dodge this bullet with $10 worth of batteries. [:I]

If you need more on the Smart Key --search the forums here....

RE: Electronic Keyless Remote

MJ is correct,Smart key only has 24 combinations per car, three are used two remotes and 1 emergency key. If a key needs to be replaced go the "additional" route. My dealer ,or someone screwed up, the new remote opened the door, but would not start the car for an hour while it was communicaring. Then it wiped out my good one. I have no idea what they ordered to fix it but, I have two new remotes, it works.
To ge to the batteries pull the emergency key out of the remote, there is a little gray bar in the opening, push that in and the electronics will slide out like a drawer.
BTW those Ebay remotes are good for housing change only if yours is beat up, the elecronics are useless no mater what the seller says.
The MB center has a data base for each car and wil usually ship in one day.
"replacement wipes out the old"
"additional gets you another in available codes"
They can disable remotes (lost) but it is a forever thing. Evidently someone has switched the mechanical key, you can order the key alone and slide it into the remote, you can also order the emergency key without the buttons, that will start the car and has a "hard" key

A "good working your dealer can programm" is BS when it comes to smart key.

RE: Electronic Keyless Remote

Thanks all for your responses, I have ordered an additional "Electronic keyless entry FOB" as suggested. However my local dealer parts associate had no awareness of an "emergency ignition key"(without remote functions). If substantially less expensive than the $130. electronic, I certainly would consider one of these for backup.

RE: Electronic Keyless Remote

I was given one with my 01, I asked my service advisor, and was told they stopped doing it. I guess it is the same thinking as only 4 aluminum wheels and one steel. The emergency keys should be available if someone searches long enugh.
