changing key battery

I currently tried to replace the batteries on the key of my 1999 ML320. It looks simple enough, but for some reason I cannot come up with the proper combination of replacing the 2 batteries (3V CR2025). I see the "+" on the cover, however cannot get this darn thing to work??????????.

RE: changing key battery

hey thanks for your info. I did finally find the directions to changing the battery and re-progamming the system in the owners mannual. Unfortunately, systems are not a "go". My husband's key does work on the car so that I believe there is not a fuse issue. We will purchase new batteries tomorrow in case we bought "bum" batteries. I would very much like to thank you for your help. Happy week-end. -Joan

That may also be the case and don't forget to search in the W163 forum.

What happens exactly? Will the car not start? Has anyone been stranded away from home by a bum key?

Jay please explain how you did the 5 click thing. There is no such thing (that I've found anyway) in my manual. FYI: these keys will start the car with dead batteries. They are only needed for the lock/unlock and panic functions.

Hi , after changing batteries in the fob my manual said to re sync the fob . Put the key in and turn ignition to 2nd position, then turn key back to 0 position and remove key, then within 60 seconds hold the lock button on fob and then press the unlock button 5 times . Hopefully it should work ok . If not there must be another fault
