What is this thing?

Pulled my rear bumper on CLK to replace and found this. Two black boxes on either side connected with coaxial cable. The cable end was not hooked up to anything and laying near sub-woofer. Any Ideas? Parktronic?

RE: What is this thing?

I believe it is a bumper-mounted antenna for cell phone; likely of Hirschmann manufacture.

TK, when are you going to get the EPC? :)

It's part 85 in this diagram, the cell phone antenna. Considering the year of your car it's probably single band and would be of no use even if you installed a new phone kit (which would likely use the newer bands).

RE: What is this thing?

There is a discussion of antennas at http://forums.mbnz.org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=1189663&posts=20&hl=V710 One E-Class owner indicated that his '00 had a dual band antenna; and the antenna in my '00 S500 also worked just fine with dual band, once I upgraded the linear compensator and antenna switch. See http://forums.mbnz.org/publications/pub.asp?id=317 The antenna itself could turn out to be quite useful if you choose to use a modern cell phone.
