RE: Considering an S-class (used)
If I were you, I'd update to a 2003 Audi A8L or S8.
If the S600 has your attention, then the S8 should as well.
If you're griping at a timing belt being done, then the S-class may not be for you...Audi's main problems were in the 80's and they've seemed to have learned somewhat from the bad rap and electronics problems that happened in 87-88. MB is pulling an 80's Audi performance as we speak.
Still, comparing a new Audi to a W126...again, no comparison...The S in this situation is the best.
As far as 4-matic vs. quattro....no competition...I believe 4-matic is a fluid shift system, where quattro is completely mechanical.
Also, I've read articles that that generation of S you're considering falls behind the A8 in the interior department. Audi is know as the industry standard for their interiors.
Audi's 4.2L DOHC 40-valve V8 puts out 310 bhp, where the S430 puts out like 275 bhp. The S500 is more of a match in terms of power and is more expensive, I believe it puts out 302 bhp.
Audi's S8 has a slightly modified version of the 40-valve V8 that puts out 360 bhp, the S600's V12 puts out 362 bhp.
Look at the numbers.
Get a 2000-2003 A8. You have a 1999, the next year they face lifted the A8 and gave it real xenon's and a nicer interior, that'd be my vote, bud.
I used to work at an Audi dealership and the 2000-2003 A8's are highly regarded.
Lastly, the A8 has an aluminum space frame.
