Just bought a 1985 300D

I am very new to this whole forum thing?!...So, I just bought an 85' 300D!! Very excited! Picked it up for very little money and hoping to make this vehicle last me a very long time!!! What are some of the problems I should be aware of with this car?? I am considering changing the stereo out first...Is this easy? The car has 205K on it and hums along just fine...It has a replaced tranny as of maybe 4 months ago...The heating unit is acting funny?! It will blow hot for about 5 min and then goes cold?? Please help me fellow benz lovers!!!

RE: Just bought a 1985 300D

Your heater problem sounds like the monovalve. Replace or rebuild it. Running with the selector on max heat may prevent interruption for now.

The stereo form factor is standard DIN. If you install a new head unit, be careful about using the funky sheet-metal mounts that are usually included. Installation may make removal of the wood panel (above the stereo) next to impossible. You need to be able to access the two small screws at the bottom of this panel.

RE: Just bought a 1985 300D

Thank you so much for replying! As far as the heater...I've been doing that and the heat is just plain cold air now![:(!]So...I guess I'll have to look into the monovalve issue. As far as the deck...you're saying any standard DIN should work? I don't have to worry about any crazy special cables...beyond the normal kits that comes with the stereo kits? Are speakers really easy to replace??

RE: Just bought a 1985 300D

Ask for cables for a '85 300D, of course. Yes, you'll need special cables, but that's a given for any car with an aftermarket head unit.

Note also that you have a fader control behind the shifter lever. Any aftermarket unit will have this built-in, so you may wish to disconnect that control and wire up the speakers directly to the head unit. Your call there.

I've not replaced speakers on a W123, but speaker installation is usually much more involved than head unit installation. If you found elements with the same form factor (physical size, mounting hole locations, etc) as stock, it would be quite easy.

205k? I assume you want to replace the timing chain if it hasn't been done. I recently did that on my '91 420SE/L for about $600 parts and labor. I am not sure if this applies to diesels, but I have been told that it is must for a V-8 from this era.

This is for a w126 monovalve repair. I assume your repair will be similar. The repair kit can be purchased for about $20 to $30 from benzbin.

RE: Just bought a 1985 300D

I just bought a 1985 300SD on Monday. I got it for a good price and am hoping to enjoy it. It has a few quirks in it that I will need to fix as time goes by but figured that with a 20 year old car.

I am also hoping to get years of enjoyment out of it. I will be interested to hear how you get along with your 300D over the coming years.
