E-Class to Be Fully Produced in Germany

DaimlerChrysler to Produce Its Mercedes E-Class Completely in Germany Starting in 2007

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- DaimlerChrysler AG, which is trying to streamline its operations, said Friday that all versions of its Mercedes E-Class would be produced in Germany starting in 2007.
Previous versions of the model, including one with four-wheel drive, had been produced in Graz, Austria, by supplier Magna Steyr, with some 125,000 models built. Instead, Magna Steyr will produce the G-Class off-road model.

"By continuing to produce the G-Class in Graz and manufacturing all E-Class variants at our main plant in Sindelfingen from 2007, we have found a viable solution for both partners," Dieter Zetsche, head of Mercedes Car Group and designated DaimlerChrysler chief executive, said in a statement.

The decision is part of the automaker's push to merge outsourced operations and reduce overcapacity.

Magna will produce the Jeep Commander model for Daimler's U.S. Chrysler division next year in part to meet demand in Europe. The company already builds five Chrysler models in Graz: the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Chrysler 300C, the Chrysler Voyager and Chrysler Grand Voyager.

Thanks, D.

so are those Chryslers being made for the European or American market?

One can only hope that this will increase the quality -- both real and perceived -- of this venerable model.

There is (or was supposed to be) a new "G" class. It has already been shown. It basically looked like a larger version of the new M class. It looks like Mercedes had a last minute change of mind on getting rid of the current "G" model. It will be interesting to see if they proceed with the new version and if so, will they designate it something other than the G class.

The Austrian third party plant has been producing Chrysler vehicles such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee for several years for the European markets.

Just some better facts -

There is no new G class, but there is a new GL model line-up. The GL will be produced in Alabama along with the ML and R. I think it will go on sale in early 2006. It was never a replacement for the G. Hopefully the 463 G should be around for another 5 years.

Magna-Steyr is a Canadian company. The plant in Graz also produces the X3 and Saab convertible. They also helped design the Audi TT. Keep your eye on Magna-Steyr. This is a fast moving dynamic company. The major auto companies are "hand cuffed" with long product leadtimes, corporate red tape, union concerns, capacity issues, etc. Magna-Steyr and other similar companies are going to have a major impact on the auto industry the next several years.

Search first, ask second!
