RE: Advice on buying a mercedes
Yes, you beat them in your head.
The W codes are handy because it is a simpler shorthand for a family of very similar cars, either sequential years, or built on the same platform.
Isn't it easier to say a W140 than refer to an S Class car between the years 1991 and 1999[8D]
IMHO, a W140 will absolutely kill you in maintenance. These are terribly complex cars that need to be maintained like a mistress that has photos of you with underage animals. I mean serious attention to details. If you can't see the complete history of an S Class - and it shows phobic attention to all the service requirements you should not walk, but run from that car.
I think there are several choices that will hold you well, but my money is with a W201 platform. This is the 190E built from 1986 to 1993. It comes with the 4 or a 2.6L 6. The 4 can give very nice performance while handily meeting your fuel efficiency needs. The 6 is a bit faster, but feels a little heavy in the front, it's harder to work on due to space limitations and the mileage is poorer. We owned a 91 190E and I still regret selling it. It was a lot of fun to drive. You won't blow the whole $10K, and can spend the balance on maintenance catch-up (they all have some) and after that perhaps an upgraded stereo.
Having had a Z car, you'll probably find the diesels and the S Class to be pretty heavy and ponderous.
Good luck on the car. Good luck on the new family...
