OM 617 engine swop.

Hi everyone, Need some advice so here goes. I have a 1983 Hymer motorhome with the OM616 2.4ltr non turbo engine which seems bullet proof but lacks power. The OM617 3ltr Turbo seems the best candidate for a possible swop so as I will have to do the rounds of scrapheaps over here (based Birmingham UK) a few questions to get things started.
1) Any advice on what I'm looking for will help. Haven't seen one so am guessing it will look like a 5 cyclnder version of my 616, Is that right? Cast iron block etc...?
2) Will I find the OM617 in any other doner vehicles? If so which ones are likely?
3) Will a car version do (if there is one) or must I go for the truck variant?
4) Will my gearbox match up or am I looking for that too?
Any advice welcomed, however basic or obvious it may seem. I won't be offended! Many thanks, Philzick

The OM617 is essentially the same engine as the OM616, many of the parts are interchangeable and it will look the same. I’d look for a wrecked 123 turbodiesel.

RE: OM 617 engine swop.

Philzick,

I would look for a 617 that is already turbocharged, they are built with better internal cooling (ex. internal oil spray for cooling...). Otherwise the life of the engine would be comprimised from the heat build-up in result of the turbo-charging.
123 (300D, CD, TD)were turbocharged from 1981-> if that will help your hunt.
Might not be a bad idea to check with someone on the "Unimog" forum, as they use the 617 often but would have a better idea with the gearbox needs.

Hope this helps
