RE: Why did you buy a Mercedes Benz?
I always loved the way the 126 looked. I test drove
a few 560SEL's and a 560SL back in 98 but ended up
buying something else.
In 2004, the bug bit me again and I decided to go
with the 126 because I didn't have the cash for an
SL then. I've owned quite a few cars but this is the
only one that's ever made me want to slow down rather
than drive agressively. I feel like 'what's the rush,
where would I rather be? And when you do drive it
fast, you hardly notice it.
I ultimately decided that an SL wasn't the right car
for me and bought a BMW Z3 instead. I've had more fun
driving the Z3 than any car I've ever owned.
I've pumped a lot of money into the Benz even though
I don't put that many miles on her. Fortunately, my
BMW salesman turned me on to a great MB mechanic in
Austin that's far cheaper than the shop I was using.
Having both cars is the best of both worlds. Lately,
I've been doing a lot of research on the forums and
investing in restoring the Benz. Euro headlights,
smoke corner lights and new floor mats went in this
week. A JL audio sound system is going in on Tuesday.
New motor mounts, bilsteins up front, some AC
work and fixing the front seats coming up after that
and new wheels in March. Then I'll decide about
It might seem crazy to invest this much in a car
like the 126 where I'm unlikely to ever recoup the
investment but this car represents something special
to me, owing partially to how I came to own it. So
it's going to be around for a while.
