RE: Why did you buy a Mercedes Benz?

This 280SL is what really got me started: I bought it new in 1970 and sold it for double what I paid in 1980...

I had a new family and the SL just set in my garage under a cover. It seemed a shame to "waste" such a beautiful car...

Too bad I didn't know you then...I bought my first SL in 1978 (1979 model) and could have had a classic...:-)

RE: Why did you buy a Mercedes Benz?

I'm 56 and have always had exposure to luxury and performance cars, even if I've owned a mutt.

I care for four grandchildren about 60 hrs a month and do graphic design via telecomm in my home studio—no commuting.

After our '87 BMW 325 died throwing a number of valve stems, we are going to buy a C230 K. All the luxury upgrades, tricked out with the 17" wheels, etc. Am I nuts? My last three years, I put on about 8k on the now-deceased Bimmer.

I'm hoping our minimal use, about to increase a bit now (we live in the Pac NW), will help keep our maintainence costs somewhat reasonable. Buying for cash, I'm still banking about half the projected car payment in anticipation of the worst.

But I want a performance car that had a cool, luxury interior, could be had at reasonable age and mileage for my budget of 14-20k, and was safe. Also, my assumption was that MB engineers their cars for AT from the git. BMW offers it as an option, but everyone knows you get the Bimmer with the stick if you want some thrilling performance.

Damnit Ghee, your post is so self repressive and constrained.
Let the floodgates open mate - I feel sure you won't regret it.

You should know I don't have it yet. I take delivery next Tue or Wed.
So I guess I'm a bit trepedacious. But I bought it because I have a keen interest in joy. My immediate plan for the day I take possession (if it's not pouring) is a long ride into the backroads of Washington State and Oregon.

RE: Why did you buy a Mercedes Benz?

Mercedes-Benz cars have been part of my life from the first moment I was born. My father had a garage which was specialized in tuning Mercedes cars, especially AMG, Brabus and Mosselman Turbo parts. As a young boy I remember standing, walking, running through the workplace, opening my eyes wide, and get stunned by all those dreamcars comming by. Our family shared laughter, enjoyment, but also fear and tears caused by that amazing company. The most extreme people came to buy the most extreme umbau's. President Mobutu of Zaïre and his sons, London drugdealers with a W116 280S with over 700.000miles, a diamantmerchand from antwerp with a gun in his glovebox, etc... In that time, we've seen/experienced things we couldn't even dare to imagine.
My brother, sister and me are practically brainwashed with Mercedes-Benz. We've barely known different.
Although the bussiness was ceased in 1996 (partly because AMG gmbh was bought by Mercedes-Benz for 51% in 1994), I'm still an absolute die-hard mercedes lover. The cars I cannot let go, and will always keep buying and admiring, are all the 'post-'93 cars. I don't have a real 'feeling' for the mercedes cars produced after '96.

Since I was such young age, I only remember fragments of that time. At the moment I'm 19 years old, and when I think back about the old days, I find it a real pitty I can't be a part of the story no more.
My dad preserved a few cars from that era. They're standing in our garage for about 7 years now, but he kept them just because he knows I'm so attached to them. I'm planning on restoring them all in honor, and I'm also going to re-live that era again in my life.
Cars have been, and still are, the biggest part of my life. Believe it or not, but my first word as a baby was not 'mama' or 'papa', no, it was "auto". Yep, I guess if that's the case, my destiny must have something to do with these faszinating steel creatures.

My first car is a 190E 1.8. I'm planning on putting a 2.3 in it, and slowly make it a showroom-worthy 190, despite the mileage. An old Alfa Romeo is also on my little list for the next few years (maybe a giullia, or a 1300 Junior), and I'll be restoring my dads 300E biturbo, and an '83 190E AMG, the first 190 ever that my dad tuned).

I'm gonna live my dream, I'm destined to and I WILL make it happen.

regards,

Matteus

RE: Why did you buy a Mercedes Benz?

My dad drove a 190SL for a while. Once he was stopped by a NYS trooper, presumably for speeding. The trooper was so enthralled with the car, asking questions, he never mentioned any violation.

Those were the days you'd get a free ride ride right to court if you were from out-of-state. He tended to swing between Cadillacs and MBs but no Caddie ever got him out of a ticket.
