RE: Why did you buy a Mercedes Benz?
I've posted on this topic so many times in the past few months... but let me think about how many times the "Star" has been some part of my life:
1982:I was 6 yrs old, the next door neighbor's mom had a W115 240D, root beer brown. I commented on how much the grille looked like our then new 1982 Plymouth K-Car... (Daimler-Chrysler hint 15 yrs ahead of time?)
1987:When I was 11 my Dad wanted some kind of 60s classic, urged on by me... he always liked the W113 SLs, style-wise, and who can argue with the sound of that exhaust winding out to redline in 3rd? Maroon over tan Tex '65 230SL joined our fleet for about 3 years. My only regret is that he sold it before I got my license. I would probably have treated it like Ferris Bueller's parking valet anyway...
1989:While we still had this SL, I became pals with a kid in my class and my Dad became golf buddies with his Dad... who had a 560SL in smoke silver. This car impressed me, even when I was forced to take the 3rd seat in it. Ah, cruising to class listening to De La Soul in a 107... what better way to arrive as a 14 yr old HS geek?
1991:Canadian oil speculators don't keep their cars for long... from the perspective of here and now, I'm glad I got a ride in a brand new 126 once! Jeff's dad traded the 560SL on a 1991 420SEL, I recall getting a ride in that one and gawking at the CD changer technology... Harry Chapin, Dave Brubeck, and the Kinks all without changing discs, lookee there!
1994:In college, I became pals with a guy from my dorm who also had a Pixies sticker on his car- mine was a 1985 Chrysler LeBaron, his a 1972 220 bought from the paper for $1000. Guess we know who had the better college ride? We got a 1970 280SE running and sold it to a local shop owner at a profit... this guy (Keith Brooks) had a nearly new 1994 E320 convertible with the plate OTTO VU which of course means V8, but he was saving it for a 6.3 after selling his 280SE 3.5 Coupe. Joel (220 owner) later got a 1958 220S while I got infected with the Audi Quattro sickness.
2003:Dad traded a Saab 900SE convert for a 2001 SLK230. Maroon over tan like another 230 roadster we knew well, but I didn't point this out until after he took it home. I admired this pocket-sized sports car, and enjoyed it greatly on a run from Morenci, AZ to Alpine. Those who know the road will understand.
2004:I took a job with an indie shop after several unsatisfying years with a property mgt firm. I fixed quite a few 123s and 126s in addition to the VW/Audi trade which is our main business. I drove a 420SEL and quickly conclued that I wouldn't mind one of these when funds permitted. More later on that one...
2005: Having just sold my Datsun 240Z but still up to my ears in Audi Quattro madness, when my boss felt like selling his silver 1981 300SD, I had to bite at $1500. It's been fantastic since April... I drove it to the Coachella Festival (biggest concert EVER!) three days after taking it home. Is there a more magical first-Benz trip than a three day rock festival 250 miles away?? She did great and the memories of music and OM617 engine noise will always be tied together for me!
The 420SEL which inspired me to want a 126 came into my hands when the timing chain broke soon after. Some reflection followed, I decided that I'd rather have a silver diesel than a blue gasser. Thus the 420 came apart, and the 60+ parts buyers have helped me sock away money for the next MB. Which isn't an if, but a when.
And that's why I have my beloved 300SD. It had to happen.
