1969 280SL Vin# scam or what.

On e-bay #4580667107 1969 280sl(sold $13350.) While it was on e-bay I called the owner and asked for the correct vin#. He never gave it to me. The car was sold and just last night the seller called and said the buyer never responed. He wanted to know if I was still interested. I asked for the the Vin# again, he said why. I told him so I could look up the maintanance records. Here is the vin# 280sl0008971.
He claimed he read it off the registration, and the insurance card. I am certian the # is wrong. What do you guys think. Thanks

RE: 1969 280SL Vin# scam or what.

I have a 69 280S an it starts with : 108016
which is the "chassis #"
I think his should be the same ..
then there are about 5 or 6 digits for the rest of the vin.
have him send you a picture of the drivers side door panel with the vin plate on it. :)

I thought the vin would start with 113 being the chassis, then xxx body engine type, 1 or 2 for left or right hand drive, then 2 or 0 for auto or man.

RE: 1969 280SL Vin# scam or what.

Seller doesn't know a VIN from a van...

VIN should read something like:

WDB1130161A008971

although I may be wrong about the WDB at the beginning. The Russian VIN site doesn't go back past 1980 so that is no help.

MBUSA can give you the build data if you have the correct VIN but I don't believe you'll find a Carfax that will help anyway.

Sounds like you need to look at this one in person anyway.

Good luck,
Kevin

Hmmm...

I just looked at the listing over on ebay. you really do want to look at this first - something doesn't look right about the interior.

Putting an XM in the dash? To each his own, but he is screwing with a collectable car that is worth more if kept original.

There are a lot of people that would jump on a 113 Pagoda for that price, so those prospective collectors must see something or know more about what it will take to put in in top condition. Be careful.

RE: 1969 280SL Vin# scam or what.

The Russian site doesn't go back before 1980 because there were no VIN numbers before then (at least as a standard) everyone did what they felt like to keep track of production units released and they could vary from market to market.

Your idea of a picture from the doorpost is the best idea.

Does the price reflect his taking a machete to the center stack? and any other changes? If so enjoy, but look for the restoral parts for a future upgrade (regrade/restoral?)

What's the eBay url?

Thanks for all the replies. I called this morning and left a message " the vin# is wrong, look at the drivers side door frame" We will see if he calls back. Thanks Joe

RE: 1969 280SL Vin# scam or what.

to clarify my first post.
I meant to say 108016xxxx is mine.
yours should be the same with your chassis # as the start.
I was too lazy to look up an SE chassis # :)
I hope you knew what I meant.

btw. I registered mine in N.J.
with only the last 6 digits showing on the Title ???

I've never seen a Title with less than 12.
I was nervous about the legitimacy of the document.
DMV was even perplexed
but when the woman entered it into the computer,
it wasn't an issue..
no problem transferring the title.
hmm. Government Agencies never cease to amaze me.
