Its a bit difficult to explain but I'll have a shot....
The steering lock mechanism is a branch off the steering column, the lock (key-barrel) will intersect this and on the back side of this is the elec switch part.
So if you've gotten the wires off the switch, you just have to remove the screws.... a mirror and a light helps, The electrical part of the switch is not tamper-proof in the way the steering lock is, It can be removed without a key. The steering lock part definately will need a key.
Dont worry about getting the switch back in,theres a tab on the housing and it will only fit one way if you set the switch and ignition key to 'off'.
As I mentioned,my experience with removing the steering lock/ignition switch is with the W115 bodies, It looks like the one on my W123 but the W126 may be totalkly different.
