Switching to S320 - Advice needed

I'm thinking of switching from my 1989 300D to a newish (to me) S320 (1997). The spec's superb but there are 2 things I don't know about that are probably anathema to S320 owners; what's the mpg like, and can you fit a towbar?

RE: Switching to S320 - Advice needed

Hi, Gary, and welcome to the forum.

The original MPG for the S320 was 17/24 EPA and at least for the few MBZs I've owned/played with the specs seem pretty close.

As far as towing, from what I can find MBZ did not offer a towing option with the car. That said, etrailer.com lists one for the 97 S class (2,500 lb cap.) and in any event a good shop can fit a tow bar to almost anything, but that's only about 1/4 of the battle. It's going to depend a lot on what you're towing and how heavy it is. The 320 is an awesome engine, but that's already a very heavy car (over 4,500 lb with a tank of gas) and throwing a tow behind it may render it simply insufferable. As well as seriously sucking up the gas at that point.

Personally, if I had to tow with an S-class, I think I'd go for the 430 -- at least if I planned on towing anything more than a couple of mountain bikes.

Just my two cents worth. [:)]

Take care and enjoy the ride,
