Bench Testing Ideas?

Through skill, cunning and greasy wrench work I now have two engines/ transmissions and some accessories that will become one during a rebuild/restore of a 380SL. The bad news is I have no personal history on these parts. Even if they were from previously running cars, I'd hate to re-install them as-is only to find out there's a problem!

So...this question is basically about bench testing. Here's the scenario: Suppose you have two transmissions or two oil pumps sitting on the bench. Is there a way to look at/test/inspect these matching items and tell which is best? which is worst? which need a teardown/rebuild?

1. Transmission
2. Oil Pump
3. A/C Compressor
4. Smog Pump
5. Fuel Distributor

Thanks very much for your ideas/thoughts. Dave
