1984 500 SL Grey Market

A friend of a friend of mine is selling his 1984 500 SL. I have only seen pictures of it and, from appearances only, it looks awesome. I've been told it is in pristine condition. Several of my friends have seen it and have ooo'ed and ahh'ed about it's appearance. It has been garaged and very babied/pampered. Same mechanic since the beginning and drives like a dream. $1000 wire tires. I don't have all of the information I need on it, but I do know it is a grey market car, though. I've just started doing very preliminary research on this style of car and I'm interested in finding out people's thoughts on the model and the "grey market" nature of the car. I live in California and currently have a 66 Mustang convertible, which I love, but I may be interested in making a change soon. Any thoughts and comments will be greatly appreciated.

RE: 1984 500 SL Grey Market

Hi and welcome to the forum!

First of all, come on over to the R107 section, since that's what that car is and there are a number of members with similar cars.

Grey market means that this is a Euro-spec vehicle imported not by Mercedes, but by a private importer. Back in the 80s a lot of cars got here that way.

It would be nice to see some pics. For now, here is a good article I always recommend to R107 newbies:

Mmature (aka Blimey) here! Thank you for your reply and the informational link. I'll get on the right forum board shortly.

And, by the way, I agree with you on the glass of wine and the panino...pure happiness!

You may wish to check out whether or not it will "smog" (if it is not already registered in CA).

Emissions testing here (TX) is a lot looser and mine passes fine but I don't know that it would in CA.
