Id buy a later model one. 97 98. IMO, the early ones were really boxy and ugly. There also a bitch to fix Ive heard. They got electrical problems.

I'd prefer the coupe, 600SEC.

RE: 400, 500 and 600 SEL

I think the answer to your question is that they're all pretty much the same body (there was an extended length)- major difference is engines - -small to the large v-12 with gas mileage corresponding. A very different ride and handling from your 230!

I've not been a fan of the early v-12's for service reasons, but others will love the power.

Just do your homework and get the service background of each - - -and then read the forum for the subtleties of each model.

Good luck !

RE: 400, 500 and 600 SEL

They are basicly engine size, 400 &500 are V8 600 is a V12. The V12 is mostly two identical 6cyl 300s on a common crankshaft with the xpense associated. There were not too many made but people love them, The 500 was most common being a long wheelbase sedan, the 600 had a unique AC system buit into the arm rest, and more burl wood panels. The 92 being the first year had some quality issues, AC, Bose , window regulators, and some had severe vibration issues at 45 mph, which would come and go, that were never identified but the 95 being lowered did not suffer from those issues. MB did a silent rebate program on the 92 with anywhere from $3000 to $5000 coupons, and some say it was the result of a class action suit.
I have had a 500 for the last 12 years and other than the vib issue have accepted everything as maintenance, when everything works you cant top the car!

RE: 400, 500 and 600 SEL

I think my '93 500SEL is the second most beautiful car that Mercedes has ever built (the first being the prewar 540K Special Roadster). Is it expensive to fix! Yup! But it has such a presence when you pull up in front of an opera house wearing white tie and tails and your spouse in her gown and the valet takes over (and you say a quick prayer that he doesn't scratch it!). Sigh...that's what owning a Mercedes-Benz is all about![:D]
