RE: which black is the best
my s500 has the 040 black paint; i think it looks better than the obsidian black. my opinion. the obsidian black has a little fleck in the paint and gives it a sparkle of sorts when the sun hits it. not preferred compared to the mirror finish in the 'normal' 040 black. again, my preference for an s-class.
that said, benzo says that the 'obsidian black' is the 'true' black (whatever that means) and has used that phrase in marketing materials for the last w140 (us1999) series when benzo made 500(?) or so 'grand edition' s500s - among other options on the car was obsidian black paint.
and - today - when you order a car with obsidian black - even on the higher end models - it costs an additional charge of $650 (or more - can't recall off the top of my head the exact amount). with the additional charge - i would think that there is something additonal (like the extra clearcoat the original author of this thread desrcibes) above and beyond the normal paint -- but -- i don't think that is the case as also pointed out by a response above. in my opinion, there is nothing special about the application of the paint or its additives per se as much as it is the absolute colour of the obsidian black paint that minimises the "marks" more than the 040 black - just like silver minimises the look of dirt on a car more so than any other dark coloured car.
so a long winded way of saying - i don't think there is an advantage over ordering obsidian black over the 040 black unless you prefer the sparkle look it provides.
