Gasoline

Hi Benz friends, II bought 6 month ago a 190 E 230 (1984) with 2000000.00 miles on it. I live in California. And I was just wondering what kind of gas I should use?

I get so many different answers from friends. And since the rising gas prices I was just wondering if it is okay to get the cheapest fuel? The guy that sold the car to me said I always should put the highest grade in otherwise it will ruin the engine. I had told him that I put the lowest grade (I think it's 88?) and didn't hear any ping from the engine and no performance difference, but my friend still insists that I should put 92 grade in otherwise it will ruin the engine because the car is so old. Is that right. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Volker from Hollywood.

RE: Gasoline

That car expects premium. If you put low octane it will try to retart the spark sufficiently to avoid predetonation. Your power will suffer and the engine will run hot - hopefully not too hot or that will end all of this in a hurry.

The moral of the story is that 10 cents per gallon savings is not the saving you want or need.

Buy your gas at Costco and you will pay less for your premium -- probably less than a lot of regular stations.

Good luck.
