I agree that a 3rd party warranty might be a bad idea, and there a lot of posts (both pro and con) on this subject.
I'm pretty conservative, and wanted a warratied MB, so I bought a CPO from a dealership (standard 12 months and 100,000 miles). The car had 52,000 on it, and because I would never drive 48,000 in 12 months, I paid $1,845 for 12 more months. This will vary model-by-model, and mine was a 2001 E320.
