1982 Convertible

I have a chance to buy a 1982 380 Convertible. It is in excellent condition, has the hard and soft top and everything on it works. It has only 48,000 miles. I afraid the seller is asking tto much. She asked a friend from a smaller market and I guess he was playing the supply-demand game and told her to ask way tto much. I am in the St. Louis market where Mercedes are a dime a dozen and you see a ton of those early '80s models still on the road. Again, what should I pay.

First, make sure it has been converted to the double row timing chain or else you'll be in for another $3000 on top of whatever you pay for it. Or better yet, use that as a bargaining chip to get the price down.

Show her some comps on cars.com or such.

RE: 1982 Convertible

Why do you covert to a double row timing chain? I've never owned a MB so I'm kind of new at this. Thanks. By the way, how would I know? I doubt oif the women who is selling would know that.

RE: 1982 Convertible

For some reason, Mercedes installed a single row timing chain on the '81 and '82 US version 380Sl's. They are a time bomb weaiting to happen. When that chain breaks, often times with no warning, it's new engine time. The only safe fix is to convert it to a double row timing chain like every other Mercedes before and since has. Most by now have been replaced if they are still on the road.
