RE: Telephone in 2001 E Class
All 01 Es were wired for Cellular phones. If the previous owner had one installed you will find a cradle under the top armrest cover, with a flat plug and a coiled cord to plug into the phone. there will be additional items in the trunk, a PSE to support the phone , a splitter that routes the Tel-Aid antenna to it, possibly a voice activation module and the associated cables. The cell phone was a Motorola Timeport, and it has been discontinued. The phones were proprietary so non MB phones would charge but not interface. The other wrinkle was that the phones were "carrie" specific, ATT/Cingular/Verizon etc. The PSE was also carrier specific. These phones could not be moved from carrier to carrier and were model specific. I guess you could go to the dealer and get the parts to convert to V60, but those phones are getting hard to find and you have similar issues. There is a fellow selling MIK box (see audio section) that claims they can interface non MB phones. I started to do mine and my friends at MB gave me some parts a phone (Verizon) but I am on Sprint, they gave me a Sprint PSE, I finally gave up on it and use my Timeport on a no mark cradle with a hands free kit. If you have deep pockets and buy all the stuff from MB remember you still have to have the fiber loop activated. If you know what was installed you might find a phone on E-Bay. The dealers get a lot for their stuff, and get a kickback when they activate a phone.
