190E Running Hot

I just purchased an 87 190E and its running warmer than I would normally expect it to, around 110 on the dash. It will go down to 80C but you got to get it cruising around 45 before that starts to happen.
Anybody have any ideas?

This is the 8 valve not the 16, therefore i would expect to be cooler than the 16valve. The thermostat has been changed out, raidiator flushed and so on, but still running hot. Am i looking at a water pump issue?
Thanks for any input.

RE: 190E Running Hot

Have the function of the auxillary fans checked out. Simple test . . . in the driveway, start up the car with the hood up, wait a few moments and you should see and hear the aux fans spin up, cool the radiator and then shut off until the temp sensor at the front of the block tells it to spin up again. If the aux fans don't come on . . . it's either the sensor or the fans.

RE: 190E Running Hot

Heres what i did, I tacked welded the main fan so that it would be running instead of on the clutch, but the aux fans dont seem to be kicking in.
Thanks for the info

I had the same issue on mine. Your fan clutch must be worn out. Also, have the thermostat changed.

RE: 190E Running Hot

The fan on my '85 190E would kick on too late as well. I simply connected a hot wire from the fuse box(hot when ign on) to the elect fan in front and problem solved.

RE: 190E Running Hot

i have the same problem with my 500 sl
once you have flushed the radiator, checked the tensioner and the belt to make sure all is well, once the expansion tank for the radiator does not have a leak, then it is probably your clutch on the main fan.
reason being once you are moving at about 50 it cools down.
if you say you have tacked the fan so that no clutch is necessary then the auxillary fans must be giving some problems

RE: 190E Running Hot

From my experience this is still normal specially when you do not used the a/c system. the engine fan magnetic clutch has a temperatue switch on next to the thermostat and if the a/c is not switched on the fan only actuates at 110 and switch off at 80. but if you want you can install a spacer on the midle of the can and the clucth that the fan will always be engage no matter what temperature it is, the catch is that is it a little noisy and additional strain for the engine.

Simple check is to switch the a/c on and check, the fan should work at the same time the aux. fan.if so this is normal[:)]
