MB Diesels have a great reputation for reliability but only if they've been maintained and serviced appropriately. The 240 D, the type of car your looking at, may have the best reputation of all MB Diesels.
If you are into cars, like to chase down parts, work on stuff yourself, and don't mind paying a little more for things because of owning a classic, go for it. But, it will be initially a constant expense maybe as much as a cheaper car payment.
If you want to drive it just until the wheels fall off and you can get something else, that works too.
I'm guessing you want to have a trouble free get around town kind of car, I wouldn't do it if I had a small discretionary budget.
