According to the original poster:

It's campaign number 2005020003.

The vehicles included are in the model ears with 1998 through 2001.

Models are:
163, 202, 208, and 210 with the 112 engine.

129, 163, 202, 208, 210, 215, 220 with the 113 engine.

Also included is the 2001 model year 170 with the 112 engine.

Don't go crazy, folks, it was a supplier problem and just because your car fits that model, engine and year does NOT mean you have a defective HB. You can check it yourself for peace of mind -- I did.

The HB is located immediately behind the large pulley at the bottom-front-middle of your engine. The part number is stamped on the outer arc of the HB, so if the crank is in the proper position it's VERY easy to see. You may have to start and stop your engine several times to get it to rotate to the correct position, obviously don't be looking around under there while the engine is running.

Once you locate the number see if it is one of the two below, if not, breathe a sigh of relief.

The only two part numbers affected are:

A112.035.00.00

and

A112.035.06.00

Looks like my harmonic balancer went out last night on the way home from the office.

Luckily, i was a very close to my indy repair guy and left the car their to be towed to the dealership.

questions since i am not a "car" guy.

1.)would this have cause the car to jerk when going from park into drive?

2.)If other damage was done to the car as a result of the HB going out will MB cover the costs.

They ran my VIN and told me that my car was a part of the recall.

TIA

I'm not really a "car guy" either, but am curious as to how you know that your HB went? 1) depends on exactly when the HB went and if the car was in Park at the time. Though there could be a connection, I'm not sure what would have caused the jerk... 2) I would assume they would cover any HB-related damage...

If your car was on the recall list, your dealer should have repaired it a long time ago! My dealer automatically fixes anything on a Recall or Campaign w/out even telling me. Are you sure yours wasn't replaced and the problem you experienced might have been something else?

I know it's the HB because my indy guy looked at it when I got to his shop and thought the part had a recall.

He could have hosed me for a couple grand and I would never have known MB would fix it for free.

He just landed a customer for life and a raiving fan!!

Please report back when you get it fixed. I'm curious about what all was involved and how much it cost, if anything. Others can benifit from your experience too.

And welcome BTW!

Not sure why, but I believe it only applies to US models. If you have an MBUK equivalent to our MBUSA, you might call and ask them. We'd all be interested in what you find out... Only certain VIN#s are involved here, and it might be that your car just isn't involved, but some UK models are??

Damn!

Finally got off my arse and did some checking. My HB has the part number as part of the recall (A112.035.06.00)

Does anybody know if Mercedes actually manafacture and build mercedes cars in factories in US or do they import all the parts from germany and put together?

I will have a look tomorrow and see if there was recall in Ireland
