1985 Mercedes books

Hi,

My wife is the new owner of a 1985 Mercedes 300D, bought at a charity auction. The engine seems to be in great condition, 159,000 showing on the broken odometer. Tranny lags a little going into gear, some front end shimmy at higher speeds. I do some of my own work, but have never owned either a Mercedes or a diesel. Heck, I can't even figure out the climate controls in this car!

Can anyone tell me where to buy an owner's manual? I have looked on ebay and a few other places. I would also like a general repair book. She was told that the car was not originally built for sale in the US, but it has the speedo in MPH. Seems that it would be in KPH if meant to stay in Germany. right? And does that really matter?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Keith

RE: 1985 Mercedes books

You can go to "the source" for owner's manuals, MBUSA.com or have the dealership order them for you. There are also booksellers like www.autolit.com that might have used copies.

If the car was a "grey market" import, a model that was not originally offered in North America, it would have had to have been converted (federalized) before US Customs would have allowed it in. One way of checking is to see if the VIN is a European or North American number. European VIN numbers begin with 3 letters, while North American numbers begine with 4 letters. Also, federalized cars will have data plates (on the driver's door sill) that will specify that the car has been certified by Mercedes-Benz USA.
