RE: '73 450sl value
Try the edmunds(dot)com forums. They have a real world value forum in smart shopper. They are the best at this. A couple of dealers help in hosting it and provide solid answers. I've used them several times moving the old iron out - and pricing the replacement.
Absent that, use Kelly Blue Book and work up from Trade in Value ( not Private Party and never Retail)
It should go for somewhere between $3500 and $5000 depending on condition. If the tires and brakes are new, the rugs look like they were covered since day one, the seats hovered in and the engine is a reasonable place to set up your dinner -- then the $5000 makes sense.
This means it has both tops and the convertible top has no canvas rot, tears, stains, etc.
I'm not sure where you are -- but in Southern Calif they are known by some as Beverly Hills Celicas and there's millions of them in great shape. Pick your year, color and options.
