SL500 Hardtop Problem

I have a problem removing the hardtop and I am hoping someone in this forum can give me some pointers/guidance. Last winter I reinstalled the hardtop to leave it ready for the new season. A few weeks ago I attempted to remove the hardtop and I could hear the "engine" moving but the top did not disengage. I took the car to the dealer and they claimed it has a bad module and starting repairs would be around $4000 plus any additional damage discovered during the service restoration process. I have done some research and have been told that the probability of the module going bad is minimal. A second and third opinion should be an option for me. Is there a manual way of removing the hardtop in the 1996 SL500? Any help will be greatly appreciated
