Trailer Hitch Questions

Hi,

Anyone here know how about trailer hitches, specifically:

Class 3 trailer hitch on 1998 ML320

1. What are all the other things one would need to buy?

2. How does one put a hitch on by themselves? Do instructions come with the hitch?

3. Is it easier to put one on by yourself or take it to a dealer?

Any assistance would be of great help. Also if there are other threads that talk about this, please point me in that direction.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Trailer Hitch Questions

The factory hitch bolts on quite quckly, the bumper comes off after removing the bolts under the covers. You need to take out the spare tire, and bolt the hitch on. The wiring connectors are behind the wheel (inside)liner. There is a grommet and the cable plugs in and the cable has a grommet and bracket.
I was going to do it but traded my 99 rather quickly (worst MB ever) but the fellow in the MB body shop told me he does it in less than 45 minutes. You will have to cut a hole in the filler panel or just leave it off.

RE: Trailer Hitch Questions

If you have average mechanical skills, it should be pretty easy. You need to torque the bolts correctly and repeat after a few weeks. The plastic bumper comes off easily for installation. The instructions are pretty good, but require a sense of three dimensions to follow the proper procedure.
