1985 500SEL Sooo whats the best stuff?

Hey all, glad I could find such an enthusiastic forum for M-B!

I am currently 20 years old and am well on my way to aquiring my first Mercedes and boy am I excited for it! It's a 1985 500SEL with 260,000 miles but as we are all well aware, it still has so much life left!

Everything checks out great and all and I know there is so much within this car that sets it apart from other makes, Mercedes I know is awesome.

So, I was hoping you guys could lend me some knowledge here. All my friends don't know I am getting this car yet and I would love to point out some things that this car offers that I currently do not know, which really I don't know almost anything about the car's features.

So basically, what can you guys tell me that I could pretty much gloat about, besides it being a M-B, hehe. I already read some generic stuff about it but I'm looking for more technical insights, I have been trying to do a VIN lookup for the car but nothing has been working out..

VIN= W D B C A 3 7 D 4 F A 1 3 1 6 1 6

Thanks so much in advance guys!!!!

P.S. Is this engine really a 5.0L?

Welcome to the "club" all..

Glad to see some youthful enthusiasm. Yes, it really is a 5 liter engine. You will need to be willing to use a wrench and have a basic understanding of mechanics though or be ready to shell out some serious Kaching! when it needs "regular" maintenance and double serious KACHING!! for "repairs".

That being said, if you do some studying of posts here and at the other forum and like to work on it yourself, you are picking a good model that should be a lot of fun. Parts are easy to come by and the information and help are readily available.

Look through the different forums here and the other site for anything related to the V8 engines and the W126 chassis - you'll learn a lot.

What to brag about?: If its in good shape and has a good sound system, just take 'em out on the highway for a cruise - that's bragging enough in an SEL.

Good luck and welcome to the board.

You’ll love it, it’s the best car I’ve ever owned. If you haven’t already, read through the 126 forum, you’ll learn a lot.
