RE: BUYING OFF E-BAY?

I have bought 8 cars on ebay.
All had problems that were not disclosed or mis-represented.
Yes, I am a risk taker when the price looks good.
Worst cases:
Porsche 928 totalled but not disclosed (first ebay purchase)-- cannot drive in my own state of residence! owner refunded $1,200 for AC compressor, etc. Nice car otherwise.
300zx in 'very good' condition: $9K to repair/replace AC, drive shaft, auto transmission, struts, etc. (second ebay purchase same week) -- I started reading feedback at this point!
560SEL: a San Francisco car with rust under rear window, rear doors, trunk, transmission chewed, accumulators bad, fuel injectors, etc. -- $8K in restoration. completely undisclosed.
XJS coupe: college student bought in Florida, lived in Iniana. Photos were stunning from recent ebay purchase. Upon giving $1K deposit and flying up to drive back: car could not round the block without overheating, complete rust bucket! Threatened lawsuit but too expensive for lawyers on a $6K car. Walked away fuming.
Recent:
SL600 -- no issues except front spoiler needed painting. love it
S600 -- front rotors, otherwise great!
A8 -- perfect except tires and rotors/pads needed replacement; seller split the cost. Satisfied.
Latest:
87 928 - 'honest' (Navy military)seller described many repairs and condition, etc. but...
forgot to mention AC compressor leaked like a sieve, driveshaft needed RR, rear light wiring harness, ABS light, front pads, more body and paint, etc. Really PO'd about this one. $4K in repairs

Get an independent inspection, mobile or ask seller to take to dealer for buyer check -- for maximum safety.
You can risk smaller ticket purchases but not the big buck cars.
Compare Carfax with AutoCheck: have found major gaps where one filled out the other.
Recent gripe: Carfax runs the numbers and then proclaims: "Good News!" -- your car checks out! Well, this is really idiotic as recently I have noticed that the small type indicates accident reports in many searches!! What the hey??!

RE: BUYING OFF E-BAY?

I bought my 2002 ML320 off of eBay. The dealer was about 10 miles from where I live. SO far nothing major has happened. Only problems so far:

-lights not flashing when locking
-something wrong with rain sensing wipers

Oh and I did not have a mechanic check the car nor did I see it in person. I'm thinking I'm a lucky one.

2011 Chrysler Town & Country
2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid
2003 Yamaha V-Star 650 Classic
2002 Jaguar X-Type 2.5

RE: BUYING OFF E-BAY?

Buying an M thing is a risk regardless of the source; having a mechanic check it or seeing it in person would have been pointless – I’ll burn some candles and say a prayer for you, good luck.

M series

When I went in to the independent mechanic to fix the S rotors, there were 4 M320's in for service of some kind, more than any other model.

RE: BUYING OFF E-BAY?

Well, at the risk of piling on and going OT...

When I was last to my mechanic he had an M thing with about 500 miles of wires coming from the engine bay and a very frustrated look on his face.

RE: BUYING OFF E-BAY?

I bought three cars off ebay. All three were MUCH better than advertised. All three were bought sight unseen. All three were bought from sellers with positive feedbacks in the hundreds. None had any serious problems.

I also buy parts and stuff on ebay all the time.

While the ML has undeniable quality issues, the E-Class, S-Class and C-Class are all earning pride of place as North America's least reliable vehicles in their classes in recent years. You can freely substitute that "M" for E thing, S thing, C thing or any other thing Mercedes has a model designation for.

RE: BUYING OFF E-BAY?

Definitely look for a substantial feedback rating, 100% or very very close. No one with a high rating is gonna want to risk it by being deceptive.

That said, there's no substitute for actually seeing/driving the car before you enter into a contract.

Buying a car off of eBay is fine provided you go and see the car in person, test drive it, and have a mechanic check the car out.
That's the ONLY way.
