Quality issues, what year is the sweet spot, when did it start going down hill?

Looking at used Mercedes Benz auto. Focus is on the SL and S class. Based on all of the JD Powers ratings and from reading different publications it shows that current models are poor quality. What I am looking for is what is the quality years for the SL and S class Mercedes? Figured if anyone would know you guys should. Thanks

RE: Quality issues, what year is the sweet spot, when did it start going down hill?

For the 1979 to 1991 period, the best S Class was the w126. The w116s were fine cars but decent examples are harder to find. For the most part 1986 and later 126s are more desirable. The r107s had one of the longest production runs of any MB car – 1971 to 1987 if memory serves (someone will correct me). Again, more recent examples will be more modern and in better condition. If you do fine a w116 or 70s r107 in good condition, either should be considered seriously.
