tiptronic transmission

Is it advisable to buy this type of transmission. Does anyone know any problem about it- someone has offered to sell an E240 at a very good price but I am not so sure about this tiptronic.

RE: tiptronic transmission

tiptronic is on all new mercedes benz cars(I think they brought it out in 97 or 98 someone correct me if i am wrong) and it is just a way of allowing the driver to select gears. it was built to give drivers the best of both a manual and auto gear box. but it really doesnt give you the manual fell it wont change when you want it to change but that can help you, with the tiptronic you cant downshit and blow your engine like in a manual. basically you wont use it so dont worry at all about it its like having a moonroof in antartica you wont use it, i only use it when i want to downshift on the freeway to pass someone its just a add on to the auto transmission.

No worry about blowing out the engine with triptronic.
It is electronic transmission and the computer supervise stupid drivers. Even when you shift to reverse at 80 mph.
Not sure about parking.
Anybody has first-hand experience?

I don't remember if I've tried park position on the W211 but if you pushing the lever long is a feature where the best gear down is selected at one go (instead of going down by one). I guess some go down multiple gears from a single push too.

Anyway, the park lock is mechanically designed not to engage before the vehicle moves slowly enough (very slowly).

Electronically controlled boxes are not only protected by the computer, they still have the mechanical/hydraulic circuitry too that prevents dangerous gear selections, not sure about the wrong gear but at least a combination of clutches that would destroy the tranny if applied simultaneously. The computer has a small chance going crazy and one cannot afford losing the tranny every time this happens (even if it was one out of billion, it would still mean a lot of broken trannies).
