Ok i know i shouldn't b asking this....

Ok, since I'm really really really new to Mercedes Benz ownership all i really know about are the newer models. I can spot the difference in 01,02,03,04,and 05 models easily because that's as far back as I've studied Mercedes Benz. But I want to learn more and there's something I really should know but don't. Can someone tell me what the "W120" and the other "W###" stand for?

That's the "chassis number" or "chassis designation" which is based on the "W"agen word for passenger car in German. The chassis numbers designate the family of cars based on that chassis design. Mercedes generally has a 10 year production life for a chassis.

Hey, don't be embarassed...all these MBZ numbers are confusing sometimes, sometimes even for seasoned MBZ owners.

The "W" and number is the factory chassis designation. For example, the W124 I own is a 1993 300CE. When I call someone for parts or service and say "W124", that tells them quickly that I have an E-type, built from 1986 to 1995. In the W124 series, there are sedans, coupes, wagons and convertables. The second set of three digits after 124 are your chassis design, ie. coupe, wagon, etc.

The W120 you refer to is an antique, late fifites 'Ponton' style Mercedes sedan. If you have one, you may want to check out:

Hope this helps.

You should be asking this, this is exactly what the forum is for – the chassis number may also be associated with an ‘R,’ as with an r107 roadster, or a ‘C’ for coupe, an example would be a c126 like a 560 SEC. A letter may also follow the chassis number to indicate a diesel model, as in a w123D. The numbers are not sequential and are assigned randomly – the w201, 1982 to 1993, predated the w140, 1992 to 1999.
