Pinstripe Removal -- Paint Discoloration Risk???

I have a 2001 silver E430 with a pinstripe. I would like to remove the stripe. However, I am concerned that the paint under the stripe may be a slightly different color due to the weathering of the rest of the paint job since 2001.

Has anyone tried this? Any thoughts?

Assuming that it is OK to remove the stripe, what is the best way to do it? Should I lift the edge with some type of plastic putty knife and simply peel it away?

Thanks.

RE: Pinstripe Removal -- Paint Discoloration Risk???

since 2001 was just around the corner you shouldn't have a problem with discolouration, so feel free to remove the pinstriping knowing that little bit of info.

Speaking from experience the best way to remove it would be to lift up one of ends and pull it off the car at a 45-90 degree angle (prevents the glue from detaching itself from the vinyl).

It's very easy to do and once you get started it should be done in about 1 minute.

For best results wax the whole car (gets rid of any left over glue and helps even out the tone)

Good Luck

RE: Pinstripe Removal -- Paint Discoloration Risk???

To some degree, I think it depends on the quality of the vinyl used for the stripe and the finish underneath it. I removed an inexpensive stripe off my son's car that was only 2 years old and it was an incredibly frustrating process coming off in hundreds of short pieces regardless of the angle and pressure applied.

It was a metallic black car which might have been a factor here in AZ, and relatively easy to see the adhesive residue from the stripe when viewing the finish at an angle.

I used Maguires cleaner, then buffed the second coat of wax lightly with a polishing wheel and thusfar, it looks pretty good.

The stripe on our ML is painted so I guess that's here to stay!

For the hard to remove vinyl, a hairdryer or hot air gun can be helpful (though in summers an hour in the sun should be enough to get the stuff off with quite littls effort).

A painted-on stripe? Who made your ML? West Coast Customs?[:D]
