300SL front end noise
I'm a newbie here. Pleased to meet you all. I tried this question in the 129 forum, but no luck so far so I thought I'd give it a go here.
Here's my story:
'93 300SL. About 90k on the clock. Within the last few months it's developed a sort of "thunk" in the front end (it seems to be from there anyway). I cannot produce the sound by bouncing the car while still, by hard braking (either forward or reverse), or by severe steering inputs. It seems to occur on some but not all road bumps, yet sometimes also seems to occurs while going straight ahead on a smooth road. Steering and handling seem normal.
Wheel bearings seem fine. I had a privateer put it up on a lift and we poked and prodded at things without any clear result. There did seem to be some play in the steering idler so we applied the rebuild kit to that. No help, and -$300.00. Ouch!
After some research it seems that sway bar bushings should maybe be the prime suspect. So my questions I guess are these:
1) Does that seem like the most probable cause?
2) Is there any definitive test for this? I thought of actually disconnecting or removing the bar as a test, but don't know if that's crazy or not.
3) Is replacing these bushings a reasonable job for a reasonably competent DIY guy?
4) Anybody have a favorite parts source other than the local MB dealer?
Any help will be much appreciated.
