RE: Since it's a little dead, I'll chum the waters
I've got to say, I'm driving my 5th Benz, but with a now 18 year old daughter - let me give you the real life example from Cali.
Volvo's aren't kool enough and are too expensive to fix - ditto for any Mercedes except a mid 80's 300D and it's not kool enough either. They are both safe choices though.
We looked at some Toy's both the Corolla and the Camry and they didn't pass the kool test.
Ended up with a mid 90's Honda Civic. Very cheap to fix, very reliable, pretty good to excellent NHTSA numbers and definitely passes the kool test. She gets over 30 mpg, and no expensive parts falling off every few days.
She is paying me back $65 a month and I'm picking up the insurance and splitting the big maintenance. She pays for ( and does regularly) the oil changes, etc.
She is looking forward to a C Class someday when she is a little wealthier. I'd love to see her in one, but I'm not buying it.....
If you have a $10K checkbook, you're rolling in dough as far as I'm concerned. The Civic set us back $2500. For $10K you can do a 2000 to 2002 Civic with low miles, no worries, high miles per dino and very safe. As a bonus - she will be definitely kool. Friends will approve.
