RE: oil change???

Hi All:
Just found this forum today, and dealing with oil changes as part of my business these postings are very revealing. With the latest electronic oil life monitoring systems and synthetic oil technology, 3/3 is not necessary. I live in New York city and my 1982 300 SD goes through the stop/start routine almost daily. I use Amsoil 5W-40 with a recommended oil change of 6 months or 7000 miles, which ever comes first.

RE: oil change???

Hey, welcome to the forums[:)] Plenty of good info here for all types of mercedes.

If it jams, force it. If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.

Fun oil folklore.

It is interesting to read the stories and superstitions here. My two cents:

1. My Benz (and I assume others) has an 8 quart oil capacity. Thats a LOT more than most cars, and actually double the volume of many cars. What that means is that the oil will degrade MUCH slower and more gradually, and stay cooler. On that basis alone, you can extend intervals.

2. We can change our oil filters without dumping our oil! If you worry about dirty oil, then screw in a new filter after 4,000 miles and rest easy.

3. 3 months/ 3000 miles is marketing hoohah. With good synthetic, and 8 quarts, I intend to follow the computer recommendation, or perhaps change oil 1,000 to 2,000 miles early. I use Amsoil European formula (5W40) but would feel OK with any extended-interval synthetic.

4. There is no proof that using synthetic in older engines will affect seals. If the viscosity is correct, it should work just like dino oil.

RE: oil change???

since newer MB models are on FSS using synthetic oil, can anyone/everyone(LOL) with FSS indicate:

- the mileage/kilometers between oil changes they've experienced; and
- the type of driving you do - mostly city, highway or mixed.

1985 300SD Turbo Diesel - 299,xxx km (1/2015)
1995 E320 - 301,xxx km (1/2015)

RE: oil change???

Mixed, 17k a year. 3 oil changes per year.

The FSS would allow me to go to at least 10k per change, but that makes me nervous.
Now with the fleece filters I am not worried letting it go to 7k miles. We have almost a 9 quart capacity so the oil is in very good shape when it comes out. I just feel that oil is cheaper than a an internal engine failure.
