Any procedure to check fuel pump before dead?

From experience, if car stops at traffic light and stalls in middle of the road, one of the common reasons might be the symptom of a dead fuel pump. Of course, it could be other reasons. Is there a way to check the fuel pump by yourself? In Canada, the fuel's additive at Shell gas station before would cause the fuel sensor defective, would that also damage the fuel pump?[:)]
