help a girl on her next MB

My first MB was a 79 300D. Loved that animal... took me to CA and back in 2002, fully loaded w/ my boat and bikes on the roof! Little things and the need to upgrade took me to an 89 260E that, while I still loved, I found that, apparently that year the valve seats were not that great and they were known for those problems. As my mechanic said, "this was not the same kind of animal". Unfortunately, (or fortunately) I was in an accident and totaled my car, coming out from the bottom of a pick up truck totally unharmed. It is time for me to get another baby MB but I am willing to do the research it takes so I can get another animal.

I need advice on a good year and model for my next MB!
Any recommendations or definite exclusions?

Please keep in mind the following: I am a grad student with certain budget limitations, so according to $$ I am looking to get probably 1994 at the newest! I would ask my mechanic, but he also sells used MBs and that might persuade his choices.
Thanks!!

RE: help a girl on her next MB

i hope you buy diesel cause its superior!

w123 is a great classic series and has the most reliable benz of all times:

the 240d.get a 81-83 240d manual stick shift and it will last forever if you take care of it.

the 82-85 300d has a turbo diesel engine that is pretty fast for a turbo diesel and is the fastest of the w123 series.

now the diesel engines of the w123 are ok

but the 85-90 six cylinder turbo engines in 300d's are prone to head cracking.would stay away from those.

I'd have to agree, but I'd add the W202 in there as well.

RE: help a girl on her next MB

I like the classic look of the w123. The w126 and the w202 are also good looking on my book, however, I have to concider availability on the market.
I am definitely concidering a diesel engine because of how reliable my old 79 was, but it seems like that I wasn't alone on my good diesel experience.

eso7, thanks for that advice!! I will look out for that.
