W140 Suspension question, common problem?

Dear all,
My driver side rear suspension made some "lok lok sound when driving on some uneven road. I have brought the car to the dealer and they said the whole shock and springs need to be replaced, and since they are selling it in pair so the passenger side will be change as well. I have searched the forum and found out the shock may need to be changed coz the car is over 2 tons, but i dont know if springs are necessary, any opinion is welcome!
