With the new CLK 500 (delivered in Paris/France in August 2004), selecting from the steering wheel the 10 pre-registered radio stations wasn't working, (despite the information in the user's manual). In my former CLK 320 (same design), it was working perfectly.

Mercedes France told me that they were going to handle the problem.

Two months later, after my 2 letters and numerous phone calls, now they inform me officially (by letter) that they have the solution (coming from Germany): providing me, (in the future), with another user's manual, not mentioning anymore the pre-selection from the steering wheel!!!

Voila! Bravo Mercedes managers and shame on you!
With people of your mentality, I wonder how long can resist the wonderful image of best car in the world.

Dear Sleepwalker, I have the 2005 SL600 and I am absolutely disgusted with the poor quality of the command unit in this vehicle!! You are correct in that you can not change "pre-set" radio stations with your steering wheel controls. MB told me that it is NOT correctable! Further, the volume buttons on my steering wheel only allow volume adjustments in such large increments per thumb tap, that just one tap can mean the difference between soft music and extremely loud music. Each thumb tap is about 5 clicks on the command unit volume control. So, Sleepwalker, my steering wheel controls are virtually useless to me and I have been unsucessful getting MB to give a damn about it. Their attitude is that I do not need these funtions anyway so too bad if I don't like it!! Well guess what, I'll just pend my $150,000 elsewhere next time. If more people actually expressed their dissatisfaction, we might get someone to listen. Oh by the way, how do you like your Nav!! This is also the biggest joke of a mapping system in the auto industry. Oh, it'll get you there alright, but it will drive you in circles to do it!!! It will also drive you completely insaine if you need to get anywhere in a hurry. Overall, I must congratulate MB and Harmon Kardon for engineering one of the saddest pieces of audio/video technology on the planet!! Good job guys, you really had to virtually ignore the wishes of all you customers to do such a great job of screwing it up so bad. But, then again, this arrogance jus seems to come so natural to the MB engineers!!! Enjoy!!

now i understand how twisted their after sales service are.

they need to train their front people about customer care.

it is as clear as ice that your steering column module is faulty since you can still get response from the switch.

everything communicates via CAN (controller area network), and that signal is faulty.

your car is very much under warranty. walk in there, ask them to change the steering column control module and switch group on the steering as well.
