Newbee Needing Purchase Advice

I found a 1994 E320 with 103,000 miles one owner with all maintenance records. The car has been serviced on schedule and is in immaculant condition inside and out. All fluid changes have been with synthetic lubricants.

I took the car for my first ever Benz test drive and "needless to say was really impressed with it's smooth ride and power".

Thanks to the members on this board, I have been able to research and learn many of the pros and cons of owning and maintaining this vehicle.

The owners records show the following repairs, engine wiring harness, head gasket, air conditioner evaporator, brakes and rotors, oil sending unit, ambient temperature control and power steering pump gasket replacement.

The owner is asking 11,500. This sounds a little high for car with this mileage. My questions to board members are the following.

1. What other major repair problems are associated with this this year and class of car.

2. What is a fair price for this car considering its condition and repair record.

well, youshould check kelly blue book.com to get a fair price on the vehicle. as for other things that might go wrong, it seems that the owner has taken car of the problems as they arise. the only things i would warn about are leaks. the rear diff has a tendancy to leak, as does the transmission from time to time. neither are good reasons to pass up a car that will no doubtedly run for many years to come.

I agree it really does seem like the previous owner has had to deal with all of the major problems already, so you should have many happy years of motoring with this W124.

Just make sure to have a look around so you have an idea of the current market price.

Hi Goldwing,

It seems as if you've come across a well cared for one owner car with the service records intact.
On average, here in the US, a car will be driven 15,000 miles per year. This one comes in less than that. Well done I'd say.

Could you take it to dealership/MB specialist to have the car evaluated further? Might by helpful to you in the long run..

I'm glad to see the head gasket mentioned, as this has been a 'chronic condition' with the E, according to the MB service advisor I deal with. This observation being his quite experienced, unofficial opinion of this model.

My only experience with this car is really quite miniscule. I rented one recently while my car was being serviced........ My opinion: one VERY nice & competent machine, both at speed & on back roads. A pleasure!

Enjoy. MBL
