RE: Mercedes quality

In the book Mercedes-Benz Production Models 1946 - 1995, by Robert Nitiski - he lists the price of all models.

In 1952 the 300sl gullwing cost 30,000 Deutsche Marks 30,000DM was a lot of money in 1952 --probably would have purchased half a dozen 1952 Chevys.

Another interesting fact is that starting in 1946 through 1985 Mercedes Benz Sales increased every year, peaking in 1985, stagnating after 1985 and declining through 1995. No data was provided in the book after 1995.

One explaination for the declining US sales of Mercedes Benz was the rising cost. Mercedes quality remained, price escalated, sales went down.

A 1989 -1990 300CE cost approximately $50,000 - $60,000 -with 3.5% annual escalation the 1989 300CE would be equilivant to a $100,000 automobile in 2004.

RE: Mercedes quality

Did it account for rising import taxes in European cars?

"Did it account for rising import taxes in European cars?"

Declines and fluctuations in Mercedes Sales are due in part to increasing import taxes, currency exchange rates of the DM and dollar, and the high wages Germany pays it's workers.

Mercedes sales peaked in 1986 with the introduction of the W124 chassis at almost 100,000 cars. A few years later in 1992 - 59,000 cars were sold, I suspect factors other than quality - caused this decline in sales, just in case I'm wrong - I'm keeping the 1979 280 coupe, even if someday in future it shares the garage with a lexus.

RE: Mercedes quality

I also had an 89 300E...for 12 years. It had 200,000 miles when I sold it...to the first caller!

My new ride is a 1999 E430. It's about to get its 5th transmission! Yes, I said fifth. Of course, it has 'a highly sophisticated microprocessor' so I shouldn't complain when it gets stuck in first...

A lot of those Japanese 'transportation appliances' are starting to look pretty good.

Well, got to go now. The service department opens at 7:30 tomorrow and I need to get there before they run out of loaners!

"a highly sophisticated microprocessor"

Microprocessors - or lack there of - There's one difference in the old verse new Mercedes.
Mercedes started using microprocessors somewhere in the mid-1980's, I believe the early W124's have a few microprocessors.

Even the early Bosch K - Jetronic fuel injection system, used by Mercedes (Rolls Royce and Porsche)in the late 70's early 80's was a mechanical sytem - operating from air pressure, fuel pressure, temperature sensors, and vaccuum pressure.

RE: Mercedes quality

All I know is that none of my newer mercs can match my older ones,.... and there is no chance in hell that they can match my parents W126's & W123's.

Take for example my W210's they may be E's by name but my W124 & W123 are built so well that they still have yet to start rattling like my E280 (W210), and don't even get me started on the ML,... what a joke! I don't even drive mine anymore, i gave it to my brother!
The truth is the greatest (modern) mercs were the W123 & W126,... after that they are just decently built generic cars with a good background.

Even the sales & aftermarket are not as good as they used to be. i.e - I placed a deposit for a G55k and now they say they cant supply me one because they are currently out of stock for the middle east,... luckily I had already bought a Land Rover Defender 110 - no match but atleast I have a decent offroader now!!

Sorry, I had to vent[:(!][xx(]

RE: Mercedes quality

Dear Storm,

I use a L/R station-wagon every day for work, have done for years. Fantastic off-road, and always gets you home, but always something falling off. The appropriate word is 'agricultural'.

Back to Mercs, I've had four since 1996 to present, now have an S430 new in 2001. Great cars and wish I had experienced earlier quality as mentioned here and in 'Mercedes Enthusiast'.

Sometimes you have to have a BM, Lexus or other to confirm you were better off with a Mercedes. So, drive one for a while, and we'll see you again later.

In 8 years of high mileages thorugh Europe, never had one issue. They're the best today, in my opinion.
