1989 560SEC

I need some advice before I buy ($7,500) a 1989 560SEC with 107,000 miles. The 2-door coup is in excellent shape. The problem is that I do not know anything about this model or it's life expectancy, maintanance cost, etc.. The internet does not give me a clear picture (reviews) on the model. Please help me! Thanks, Guy from San Diego.

RE: 1989 560SEC

These are great cars but not inexpensive to own. The trick is to get a car in good shape so you can afford upkeep. Many aspects of these cars are DYI friendly to avoid labor costs. Some parts can be expensive like a fuel pump but most are not.

Here is a list of things to look out for and check:

Start the engine and listen for any sounds from the valve covers – there should be no sound at all, if you hear anything, walk away.

Have an independent mechanic you trust check the car bumper to bumper. Put it up on a lift and check the condition of the following components:

Flex discs
Rear axle shackle
Axle shaft
Rear wheel-bearing
Drive line bearing and support
Propeller shaft boot
Drive line support and bushing
Exhaust hangers
Exhaust system
Engine mounts and shocks

Check for rust while it’s up there as well.

Have the mechanic to check the engine for these possible causes for the rough idle:

1. Idle control valve
2. Idle control unit
3. OVP relay
4. Throttle position switch
5. Worn injectors
6. Broken/brittle/missing/disconnected vacuum hose(s)

Finally, post in the w126 forum for more input.
