SBC upgrade

I got my car back today from the SBC upgrade. The brake pedal feels like it has more play it. Is that normal?

RE: SBC upgrade

its your imagination. the "play" you pedal is actualy a pedal simulator. its a tall small spring, with a shorter stronger spring, then a hard rubber bumper at the bottom of the travel. this simulates the feel of a non sbc cars brake system, since your pedal is completely disconnected from the hydraulic system. by the wat, i looked again, and could not find a bulletin regarding your wheels. i had one of my parts guys pull up a 230, and checked your wheel through mercedes paragon system (its a parts directory that lists updated parts and their availabilty). your wheels part numbers have changed to 66 47 41 40, and there are at least 10 or 12 complete sets in the U.S. located in my warehouses. tell your dealer to get off there asses and get you your wheels.

RE: SBC upgrade

Well,

Two things that happen are strange when I got my car back from the dealer.

1. My car stalled when I press on the accelerator out of the dealer parking lot yesterday. It did it again today when the light turn green. Some warning lights fash in the instrument cluster.

2. I thought my brakes did not work when I almost hit a car in front of me. The dealer said that the extra play in the brake pedal is normal after the upgrade and will adjust back to normal. After I told him what happen today, he wants me to bring my car in the morning. Wife and I have to press all the way to the rubber just to stop now. Before the upgrade, my wife got whiplash when she press on the brakes.

3. Also the suspension feels bouncy.

All this may be cause by the weather, since it is now 50 degrees here,

RE: SBC upgrade

Well there is something wrong with my brakes. Dealer is looking in to it.

Here is an explanation for an expert on why I am pressing the brake to the stopper.

brakes
Hi Tom I would suspect the procedure was not successful and or aborted. I would have them tow the veh to their shop and correct the problem, you are on the back up function mode, which you could find yourself pushing the brake pedal all the way with little braking. Also they have to disconect the engine harness to perform the update, so they may not have reset your ECM adaptations, or the battery went dead during the service they do note to have a charger on while doing the recall, that could be why the engine is stalling

RE: SBC upgrade

well, i agree, and disagree. if the procedure was aborted, or the battery died, you would not be able to get the 2nd printout that you HAVE TO HAVE, to have on file to show that the recall was performed.
if your brakes are on the " backup system" your instrument cluster would display a warning message in bright red. as for the engine harness being disconnected, thats a no. if you want to see for your self, open your hood and look to your left. the large aluminum block with all the brake lines that come out of it is the SBC unit. you plug directly into that unit with an adapter that is plugged into the sds machine. your adaptations do not have to be reset. im not sure who your expert is, but, maybe he misread the recall information. take it from a technician who has already performed at least a dozen of these things.

RE: SBC upgrade

He works for Mercedes as a technician.

The brakes pedal felt better today on my way to the dealer. They ran diags and everything was OK. I told the dealer about the red and yellow flashes in my instrument cluster, but the computer did not show any error codes.

I talk to several of my SL500 buddies today, and they told me that they prefer the brake pedal feel before the SBC upgrade. Before the SBC upgrade, the brakes responds on a much lighter brake pedal touch. Now I have to press further on the brake pedal. I was told by the dealer that the brake stimulator program was modified because a lot of folks complained that the brakes gave them whip lash when they press lightly on the pedal. Now, the brake pedal just does not feel firm like it use to.

My car just needed a SBC software upgrade. It was made in February 2004.

RE: SBC upgrade

Well,

My dealer forgot to order the wheels again. Dealer did order the wheels the first time, but forgot to order again. I do not know to cry or laugh.

RE: SBC upgrade

the "feel" should be the same as before if you mean about the pressure on the pedal, and the stimulator remains the same.

the only thing that can be programmed was the travel sensor.

benztech1209 was right on his explanation. this guy is good.

RE: SBC upgrade

The feel is different. The brake pedal goes further down to the floor when I stop at 30 MPH. Something changed. Dealer only upgraded the software. In the past we just barley touch the brake pedal and the car would stop.

Folks tested the brakes in my Mercedes club and they all say the brake pedal travels more to stop now.
