Auto Transmission throttle linkage cable broke

1987 190 TD

Just bought last week and am sorting out the mechanic's that have been under-maintained. Took her to the tranny shop for fluid/filter and was considering starting the linkage/modulator adjustments but the shop discovered the cable from the trottle linkage to the tranny is broke in the rubber sleeve up near the engine. This connects right into the tranny at or near or on the other side of the valve body (couple of hours plus). Anybody had a similar problem? This cable could have been broken a long time...any opinions on what that might have resulted in for the tranny? It will be installed in a couple of days.
