E240 Burning Oil

My 2001 E240 has about 30,000km on it (22,000 miles)...

It is using up the engine oil very quickly - every few hundred kilometers, and we think the engine is burning oil.

The catalytic convertor got clogged, and now our mechanic says that we have to replace the convertor, and overhaul the engine!!

Has anybody experienced this? Our engine is still new and i don't know why it started to burn oil and the catalytic convertor got clogged! any advice?

Could the mechanic forget to service some aspects of the car duing our regular checkup to create this problem?
