Oil Indicator, I do not understand what I am seeing

1984 380SE.
The analog indicator goes from 0 to 3.
While car is in idle mode, the analog meter hangs around 0 to 1.
While normal driving the meter registers at 3 which is the max reading.

Is this normal? I thought most analog meters in a car are set up to have a min and max range. While driving normal speeds, one would expect the analog meter to register in the mid range. Is it normal for the meter to be at the maximum reading or is my oil pressure too high.[?]

That's normal, except I usually get around 2 for my idle. I have an inline 6 though (1990 300SE).

I just brought a 89 300ce, my oil pressure reading same as yours. I am not sure if it is normal. I checked my oil level and found that it is over the max line. I am going to dump some oil to see what will happen.

Hi Reggieffd & new kid,

"The analog indicator goes from 0 to 3. While car is in idle mode, the analog meter hangs around 0 to 1. While normal driving the meter registers at 3 which is the max reading."

As danwatt says: "that's normal". My '87 560 is exactly the same too.

Here is an Oil Pressure snapshot from the MB CDs as reference.

Cheers, MBL
